How to Wash Your Underwear: Do’s and Don’ts

showerWhen I was growing up as a little girl my mother would sometimes let me take showers with her. I know many of you may be able to relate on this. I remember watching everything my mother would do and try to imitate her…wanting to be big too. One thing I remember seeing her do was wash her underwear. I tried to copy but I had trouble getting it exactly the way she did. She would help me to do it right and explain to me what she was doing. Over the years I perfected it and now it is a part of my bathing routine. Some women of today may feel content with just tossing their underwear into the laundry basket and leaving it till laundry day to get washed, but here are a few reasons why doing that is a no no:

[tick]
  • Underwear may carry a scent from our private parts and if left that way will cause the washroom to have an unpleasant odour.
  • Stains may have been left on the underwear and can be harder to wash later and get out.
  • Visitors coming over may see and smell the underwear if freshly left there.
  • It sets a bad example for the younger women in the house to follow.
  • If your husband chooses to do the laundry at some point it is unpleasant for him to see dirty underwear and have to handle them in the laundry.

I understand that we are all raised differently so I leave it to each woman’s own discretion to choose to wash your underwear or not, but the benefits of doing so are good ones and here are a few of them:

[star]
  • You keep your underwear clean right away
  • If you cannot do laundry on time you can have a clean pair of undies waiting for you
  • Your bathroom will smell better having clean underwear tossed in the basket (if tossed in)
  • A good example of cleanliness is set for the younger women
  • Prevents various stains from setting in and ruining your underwear
  • This is a good option for delicate underwear to keep them in good condition

A few ways to dry your underwear once you’re done washing them are as follows:

[tick]
  • Hang them in the shower on a hanging shower rack (if you’re single or have no guests coming to stay over)
  • Hang them on a clothes hook behind your bedroom door (if you’re single or have no guests coming over)
  • Hang them on a multiple hanger in your closet

maxresdefaultThese ways of drying your underwear are just a few ideas. The underwear can be hung up until they are dry and tossed into the laundry basket or a separate basket that you have for unmentionables if you prefer. You can also just put them back into your drawer if you like, but toss them in the dryer with a fabric softener sheet first (if you have a personal dryer at home) to make the underwear less stiff. If you don’t have a dryer in your home them you can always wash and dry your underwear with the laundry.

Now here’s a little how to on washing your underwear! First thing to do is use a good soap that is able to remove odor and stains effectively and with less effort. It’s good to have a soap that you specifically use for this purpose. Try to stay away from using ivory or dove soap for this as they really just mask order as opposed to leaving a fresh smell. Once you’re about to have your shower you should start by washing your undies first. Soap up the seat of the underwear as if you were soaping up your rag and lather it well. Scrub the seat of your underwear as you would if you were trying to scrub dirt out of a shirt or other fabric. Scrub vigorously a few times and rinse out the seat of your underwear. Soap up the whole underwear next, including the seat of your panty, and scrub the whole thing vigorously. You should do this as many times as necessary until your underwear smell fresh and whatever stains that were there are gone. Keep in mind that menstrual stains may be harder to get out and might require you to soak your undies in detergent for a bit before washing them. Once you’re done scrubbing and rinsing your underwear ring it out as dry as possible and you’re done!

Washing underwear is something that is very cleanly and useful for us as women to do. As a Benjamite, I was raised this way by my mother and grandmother and I appreciate their lesson to me in this regard. I hope this goes to benefit a lot of sisters who may have needed it and feel free to share any of your bathroom cleanliness tips for others as well! Shalom.

  1. Could you provide an example of a good soap to use for this?

    • Light soaps like Summer Eve, Non-soap face wash (i.e cetaphil, CeraVe..etc), baby soap or non scented sensitive skin soaps. Inside of the washing machine Woolite is a good brand!

  2. Thank you so much for posting this!! I honestly never had a woman teach me these things. so now I will do them to become a better woman for myself.

  3. All praises, thank you for this information. Growing up I to did see my mother wash out her panties. I do occasionally but need to make sure that I make it a routine. Never thought about doing it in the shower, great idea!!! All praises to the Most High for your wisdom.
