Controlling Menstrual Cramps

Controlling Menstrual Cramps

*sigh* I hate that time of the month.  I don’t think any woman likes that time, but it is necessary.  Although we are considered unclean according to the bible, it is one of the many functions our body uses to cleanse itself.  Unfortunately, it can bring along some unsavory side effects.  Personally for me, I thank the Lord constantly for curing me.  (Ecclesiasticus 18:21)  My menstrual is one that I don’t hear many others speak about.  Which is kind of the problem.  We as women need to talk more about these things because you may have advice that I could have been using YEARS ago.  As a kid it was such an “icky” subject but now I’m like “its natural, get over it”.

Every month as the time neared I would cry myself to sleep DREADING the day.  NO!  I have never had children but I do compare my pains to such.  6-13 hours of severe cramping, vomiting, no food or water for 2 days, nausea and sensitivity to smell, cant take pills, cant use teas ahead of time… cant do anything!  It was like my period was doing the matrix move on any attempt I made at controlling it.   I would miss school, work, family functions… just completely out of commission.  My mother even started giving me sleeping pills to hope I could keep it down and it would knock me out.  Worked twice.  Then my body upgraded against that attack.  I used to be on birth control pills and for the 3 years that I had them it was… BLISS!  I decided to stop taking them because I learned things about them that… I just preferred not to have in my body.  I knew our foremothers survived without these things so I know I can too.

THINGS THAT WORK; Just not for me.

teaTea: Lavender, Ginger, Red Leaf Raspberry, Chamomile  (2 cups for at least 3 days in advance)

Pills: Pamprin, Midol, Aleve, Tylenol, Advil  (day of or 1 time a day 2-3 days ahead)

Essential oils:  Lavender, Peppermint and Clary Sage rubbed on abdomen then place a heating pad on.  Rubbed on bottom of feet to soak into body faster.  Our feet have the largest pores, and learned from reflexology, leads to almost every spot on our body.

Exercise.

Heating pad.

Okay.  Last few months I have been doing a few things.

  • REPENTING!!!  (refer to the scripture above)
  • PRAYING!!!  If you want something, ask for it.
  • Eating bananas.

I listed in order of where credit is do besides TMH just being an awesome Father to have healed me.  I am no fan of bananas but I do appreciate them.  So 3-7 days before I my menstrual arrives I add more diet by way of smoothies but now… I just drink them all of the time.  They’re so good and good for you.  Potassium, found in bananas, is a mineral your body uses to control muscle contractions. Menstrual cramps are painful muscle contractions that occur in association with certain chemical changes that begin in advance of monthly menstruation.  The more potassium in your body, the more controlled your contractions should be.

Potassium Rich Foods:

[green-flower]
  • Sweet potatoes
  • Tomato paste
  • Beet greens (don’t toss the leafy part)
  • Beans (white, kidney, lima)
  • Yogurt
  • Prunes
  • Carrot Juice
  • Molasses (great alternative to sugar or honey for the potassium)
  • Fish (tuna, halibut, trout)
  • Soybeans (unprocessed soy products)
  • White squash
  • Milk (non-fat or skim is best)
  • Orange Juice
  • Spinach
[/green-flower]

Everyone has different bodies.  So what works for me may not work for you.  I just hope that SOMETHING here helps you to make an unsavory time a little bit easier to deal with.

  1. Hello sis! This website is AWESOME! I’m glad to have accurate information available. Can you please write an article or direct me to one about what we can and can’t do during our period. I need clarity on if we are able to cook for our family, share the bed with husband, etc. Do we need to sleep in a tent lol? I know sex is forbidden but what other contact is unclean during this time. Thank in advance

      Shalom Sis mhncbu!

So happy to hear your feedback! 🙂 Yes we do need an article going into detail what we can and cannot do on our menstrual. If you have been with IUIC for more than a year, you can join the DOS Community and place a request for a sister to write and article on this subject :)!

      Much love,
      Kaniyah

  2. I had a sister who use to crawl around and symptoms was the same. The throwing up and all. So when she got pregnant and was in labor, I had the chance to be around her and just like with her regular cramps she did the same. I would tease her about acting like a baby. Whenever I had cramps and it hurt, it was never a big deal to me, I took it, and it use to be to the point with every step I took I could feel the pain. But I seen at the time as pain being pleasure. But my sister, it wasn’t until after she had her first child that she no longer had issues with the cramps.
